Become a part of an elite group that wants to make a difference. Trained storm spotters are vital since doplar radar cannot see below the storm the further out it is from radar.

Storm spotters are vital in accurately reporting weather events that threaten our communities.

Storm spotters are trained volunteers who report what they see when a severe weather event occurs. This is not just your typical severe thunderstorm and tornado event. It is snow, flooding, and an official weather measurement. It is weather damage or other significant events, including natural disasters such as earthquakes.

If you want to be involved in storm spotting activities and make a difference in your communities, you need to complete the online training and join our team of trained spotters. This training is an annual requirement for staying a member of this organization. If you forget to take the class and it expires, return and take it, and you will be good to go again.

How do I become a Storm Spotter for Storm Spotter Network?

Becoming a trained stormspotter is simple. Please go to this site and register and take the two hour class. Depending on your background in weather the class may be able to be taken pretty quickly. You must score a passing of 70% or higher and you can retake the exam as many times as you like if you fail.

It is recommended to be an Amatuer Radio Operator, but it is not required. This allows direct communications with spotters as events are happening. You can still report via this website, Facebook or X.

Does the training cost anything or is there any cost involved in being a storm spotter?

The training is free and the only cost you will incure is the gas you use to drive to a location to report and watch systems or storms. Some spotters invest in their own equipment as well. Storm Spotter Network does not provide any equipment or pay any storm spotter for their services. You are responsible for your own financial support should you do any investments in equipment and or fuel costs.

Is a storm spotter a storm chaser?

No. Although both groups have risks, they are two different types of people. A storm spotter stays in a safe place that is far enough to see the system but not be in direct danger. Storm chasers are highly trained individuals that are actually following and chasing the storms and at times can be put in dangerous situations. If you are a storm chaser you may still join this group and submit your reports.

What is involved as a trained storm spotter?

Train storm spotter responsibility is to activate and deploy to an area that allows you to view and incoming system or event. You are to report back what you see and the details. This is not a forecast for what it may do. It is what it is actually doing. If you are tied up then you are not obligated to respond to storm spotter activations.
